Autogenous vein Graft as a Replacement for the Common Bile Duct

Abstract

This study was undertaken to devise a method of replacing the common bile duct with a autogenous vein segment with preservation of sphincter mechanism of distal common duct. Using 12 Korean hybrid dogs, a segment of the external jugular vein, which was embedded into subserosal tunnel of jejunal loop, was interposed between cut ends of common bile duct. Initially, autogenous vein served as a replacement for the common duct successfully in five dogs. Obstructive jaundice appeared later in this group mainly due to stenosis of the grafted vein. This is another proof that biliary-enteric anastomosis, widely used in clinical field now, is still more superior than graft. Further trials on the replcement of common duct with preservation of sphincter mechanism is mandatory.
